Department installs replacement server computers (Expired)

Over the summer, the Department of Computer Science installed replacement Venus and Mercury server computers.

The new version of Venus, which is used by faculty, staff, and grad students, is a new Dell R510 server.  For the technically minded, it is has Dual Xeon X5570 2.93GHz, Quad core, 64-bit, Hyperthreaded CPUs; 16GB Memory - 32GB Virtual memory; and a 1.5TB Disk.  The operating system is Linux - Scientific Linux (a whiteboxed version of
RedHat Enterprise Linux).  For more details, see

The new version of Mercury, which is an infrastructure machine that supports our website and email, is actually two somewhat older machines operating in a software mirror configuration (for reliability).  Each machine is a Dell PowerEdge R200, with dual Xeon X3220 (2.4Ghz, 64-bit, Hyperthreaded) CPUs, 8GB memory, and dual 500GB SATA drives.  They are running the same Linux version as Venus.
