Great advances have been made in medical imaging technology over the last two decades. However, diagnostic interpretation of this new digital data is still largely qualitative, subjective, and prone to observer variability. The imaging informatics research program that I lead at the University of Calgary, Alberta, is focused on developing new analytical methods to identify and extract information from medical images. Out goal is to provide quantitative, objective, and reliable assessments to help improve the accuracy and utility of modern medical imaging. In particular, we want to apply mathematics, signal processing, and data management to develop methods that will help clinicians understand, diagnose, treat, and monitor disease.
