Top Ten News Stories 2013 for the Department of Computer Science (Expired)

The Department of Computer Science has identified ten of the news items published on our website in 2013 as the "Top Ten".  In no particular order, they are as follows. 

Research

1. Y. Y. Yao is identified by Google Scholar as the most cited researcher at the UofR.  His work has been cited 13,000+ times and his h-index is 60.

2. UofR hosts two of the largest Canadian conferences related to Computer Science: Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering 2013 (J.T. Yao and others) and 2013 AI/GI/CRV Conference (Butz and others).

3. B. Yang receives the Best Paper award at the joint Seventh International Frontiers of Algorithmics Workshop (FAW 2013) and Ninth International Conference on Algorithmic Aspects of Information and Management (AAIM 2013) in Dalian, China.

 4. Dr. B. Yang receives a five-year Discovery Grant. Nine faculty members also hold them: Butz, Hamilton, Hepting, Mouhoub, Sadaoui, J.T. Yao, Y.Y. Yao, Zhang (retired), and Zilles. Hamilton and Hoeber each receive an NSERC Engage grant for joint research with industrial partners. Hamilton / Hilderman / Zilles attract funding from GB Internet Solutions.

Teaching


5. Enrolment in CS rises for 5th straight year: 8% undergrad increase in Fall: From 228 to 247 CS majors, including certificate.

6. Department significantly increases its intake of M.Sc. (co-op option) and MSc (project option) students. Some of these students excel and win first place (Student Category) at HackRegina.

7. Department offers a new Creative Technologies concentration in Computer Science, developed under leadership of Gerhard in consultation with Fine Arts.

8. Dr. Sadaoui offers new course CS 476 Software Development Project.

Outreach

9. MSI Computer Camp for teenagers and Science Summer Camp (with major contributions by Catherine Song) are successes.  Special session of Summer Camp taught to students from Mother Teresa Middle School.

10. Hepting named the CIPS Volunteer of the Month for September 2013 by the Canadian Information Processing Society (CIPS).
