Oles Shnurovskyy, one of our computer science undergraduate students has attended the 3rd annual Canadian Undergraduate Computer Science Conference at the University of Toronto (CUCSC 2017 - U of T) this summer. CUCSC was designed to show off the cutting edge research from both academia and the industry. A three day event invited a discussion and collaboration between Canada's brightest computer science undergraduates and experts from academia and industry. The schedule included student speakers presenting their research, guest speakers in the form of professors from nearby universities (MIT) and representatives from major tech giants such as Google. It also included a career fair and workshops in order to polish up your resume and learn some important skills that are required to continue doing what you love. The overall trajectory of the conference was the exploration of machine learning, neural networks and visualization for the above mentioned concepts.

This conference has changed the way Oles look at his Computer Science degree. It made it explicitly clear that the Computer Science degree is not only used to create user facing software; it is used to change the future. The main goal is to advance the current state of computing while reducing the space and time complexities; working in the unknown, instead of following a manual.

Oles personally believe that a version of this conference should be done at all undergraduate Computer Science universities in order to give a larger scale perspective of the problems ahead of us and increase motivation in current and future students. He thought that this would increase likelihood of students doing research which will help technology at the end. Honestly, what tech person these days is not excited about machine learning and everything that it represents for our future?
