Larry Matthies

Larry Matthies was born in North Battleford, Saskatchewan, spent his teenage years in Regina, and graduated from the University of Regina in 1979 with a Bachelorís degree in Computer Science. He obtained a Masterís degree from the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Ontario, and a Ph.D degree from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, both in Computer Science. He has been at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory since 1989, where he is now Supervisor of the Machine Vision Group. His group develops vision systems for autonomous navigation of Mars rovers, precision landing and orbit determination for Mars and other bodies in the solar system, and related functions for robots in Earth-based applications. He participated in the rover development for the 1997 Mars Pathfinder mission and for the 2003 Mars Exploration Rover mission.
