Supervisory Committees

M.Sc. Supervisory Committee

An M.Sc. supervisory committee consists of at least:

  • Supervisor
  • Internal Members (two other faculty members, typically from within the department)

or

  • two Co-supervisors
  • Internal Member (another faculty member, typically from within the department)

Ph.D. Supervisory Committee

A Ph.D. supervisory committee consists of at least:

  • Supervisor
  • Internal Members (two other faculty members, typically from within the department)
  • Internal External Member (one faculty member from another department within the University of Regina)

or

  • two Co-supervisors
  • Internal Member (another faculty member, typically from within the department)
  • Internal External Member (one faculty member from another department within the University of Regina)

Some Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research forms require that a Ph.D. student have a chair for the supervisory committee while research is still in progress. In the Department of Computer Science, the chair of such a committee is someone who is not already on the committee. The chair is by first preference (default), the current Graduate Coordinator, by second preference another member of the current Graduate Committee selected by the student's supervisor, by third preference the Department Head, and by fourth preference someone appointed by the Department Head.

Defense Committees

A Defense Committee is similar to a supervisory committee, but augmented by a chair and an external examiner. The chair and external examiner must be from outside the department, and in the case of a Ph.D. student, the external examiner must be from outside the university. As well, the Internal Member(s) are renamed Internal Examiner(s).

M.Sc. Examination Committee

An M.Sc. examination committee consists of at least:

  • Chair (one faculty member from outside the department, approved by FGSR)
  • Supervisor
  • Internal Examiners (two other faculty members, typically from within the department)
  • External Examiner (a qualified individual from outside the department, approved by FGSR; typically a faculty member from elsewhere in the university)

or

  • Chair (one faculty member from outside the department, approved by FGSR)
  • two Co-supervisors
  • Internal Examiner (another faculty member, typically from within the department)
  • External Examiner (a qualified individual from outside the department, approved by FGSR; typically a faculty member from elsewhere in the university)

Ph.D. Examination Committee

A Ph.D. examination committee consists of at least:

  • Chair (one faculty member from outside the department, approved by FGSR)
  • Supervisor
  • Internal Examiners (two other faculty members, typically from within the department)
  • Internal External Examiner (one faculty member from another department within the university)
